Natural Area Garden Projects 1997 – 2006
During the
evolution of Planet Horticulture, McCrory and Raiche found that many
property owners had natural areas that were often neglected and
unappreciated. Raiche’s unsurpassed botanical skills and
understanding of natural areas led to a new realm of work for Planet
Horticulture. Blending horticultural areas with their larger
surroundings and creating access to and understanding of natural areas
became a major focus of work. McCrory and Raiche see the natural
landscape as it’s own kind of garden. Fragments of natural areas
harbor their own valuable ecosystem: birds, bees, butterflies, various
native plant communities and more. Encouraging healthy natural
areas encourages diversity which ultimately helps our vineyards, gardens
and homes. There is also a significant benefit in the beauty of
natural areas; a well maintained natural area can be like a private
park. From neglected corners in Bay Area urban residential lots to
the back 40 on large parcels in the North Bay, Planet Horticulture has
created amazing trail systems, destinations and gathering spots while
restoring the ecology, removing undesirable vegetation and helping to
reduce fire fuel loads.
