Roger was in charge of the Californian Collection from 1980 until his retirement in 2002. It is the largest and most important plant collection at the Botanical Garden, but had been seriously neglected for a few years. Roger set about cleaning-up and re-organizing the collection while doing extensive field work on the side and bringing in several thousand new plants to enhance the collection. While each bed in this area has a specific botanical focus, Roger was able to create an overall visual unity and cohesiveness that helped the area "read" as one garden. Roger also spearheaded the rebuilding of three important areas of the collection; the native bulb display, the alpine beds and the serpentine rock beds.
