Silverado Brewing Company

St. Helena, California  2009

The Silverado Brewing Co. was a micro-brewery and restaurant housed in the historic Freemark Abbey Winery building just N of the scenic wine country town of St. Helena. The Brewery has an outdoor picnic table eating area, since during much of the year the climate is sunny and pleasant. The owner wanted to create a more welcoming entrance with more shade for the outdoor tables, and richer, showier plantings, with fruit trees and herbs mixed in.
We chose the golden locust (Robinia ‘Frisia’) as a theme tree for the picnic table areas, as the light through the foliage is butter yellow, it is tough, fast growing and drought tolerant. We created wider entry beds with more varied and interesting plantings, which was both welcoming and helped enclose the outdoor eating space.

 Rise ~ Cornerstone

Rise, Cornerstone Festival of Gardens
Sonoma, California  2004

We were invited to create an exhibit at a new garden of gardens, Cornerstone Festival of Gardens near Sonoma CA. Each landscape architect had a similar blank plot – enclosed by an identical hedge- to create a statement garden. We created Rise, a large corrugated pipe that passed through an intensely planted mound of soil. It was to emphasize the concept of passage. While initially the area was sunny and open, over the years it grew into a dense fantasy woodland – further exaggerating the sense of transition. As the area is quite hot in the summer, the garden and the tunnel are an oasis for visitors. Children especially love playing in this space. We enjoyed collaborating with Carol Vena-Mondt, Paul Discoe, and Marcia Donahue on this project.
