Explore Hillsides & Slopes

Planet Horticulture loves hillside gardens. We want clients to use all of their property, and while slopes present access and stability concerns, they also can be an asset.

Plantings are much more dramatically displayed on hillsides – whether viewed from above or on ground-level. Elevation changes enhance the organization of spaces and functions.

First, determine where flat spaces are needed and how they will relate to the home. Keep walls and retaining structures in scale with the existing architecture.

Use sloping paths to connect the high-use areas, though in some cases, stairways are necessary. Routes should also lead to select sites for views or contemplation.

We can design and install landscaping for hills and slopes for a wide variety of interests and features including water-wise, drought & deer tolerant, feature year-round interest and color, attracts birds and butterflies, have terraced paths, or contain edible gardens – together we can turn the hill or slope in your yard into the garden you have been dreaming of.

There are other examples of hillside gardens in our residential garden gallery, and also
in the Residential Garden Case Study – a lovely slope with a mix of ornamental and edible beds.
