Rise ~ Cornerstone

Sonoma, California  2004

We were invited to create an exhibit at a new garden of gardens, Cornerstone Festival of Gardens near Sonoma CA. Each landscape architect had a similar blank plot – enclosed by an identical hedge- to create a statement garden. We created Rise, a large, corrugated pipe that passed through an intensely planted mound of soil. It was to emphasize the concept of passage. While initially the area was sunny and open, over the years it grew into a dense fantasy woodland – further exaggerating the sense of transition. As the area is quite hot in the summer, the garden and the tunnel are an oasis for visitors. Children especially love playing in this space. We enjoyed collaborating with Carol Vena-Mondt, Paul Discoe, and Marcia Donahue on this project.
